Planting JOURNALS

2017

THE NEW GARDENING YEAR BEGINS!!
1/10/2017 -- Stopped in at Kirkland's to buy seed...and the gal was a bit surprised...I reminded her we'd be planting in two weeks. She said, "Oh, you're right! John (owner) told me people would start coming in about now..." Yep, it's hard to believe, but we really can get started early!! We'll get our Spring Thaw around the 20th, so we better be ready to get things in the ground so they have two weeks to grow in the warm sunshine we always get around mid-January!

1/18/2017 - Planted 1 bed of Snow Peas, 1 bed of Sugar Snap; 1 bed carrots; 2 beds beets; 2 beds red potatoes; 1 bed onions; 1 bed spinach; and 1 bed of mixed variety of lettuce

1/25-26/2017
It's cold, but we got the rototiller started and got the whole north side of the garden tilled and ready for planting on Saturday. Pre-soaked the pea seeds. 1 lb of Oregon Giant Snow Peas has 1,800 seeds. We need 1,600 seeds to plant two beds that are 50 feet long. Should have plenty!!

1/28/2017 - Planted: Snow Peas, lettuce, spinach, beets, onions and carrots.

2/19/2017
The snow peas are up...the Sugar Snap will be in another week...since I made a BIG mistake (planted ALL snow peas...so dug up one bed, and replanted with Sugar Snap! Duh!) The beets and lettuce, and a bit of spinach are starting to poke through the soil. Have had some great rain, not too heavy all at once, but more constant steady, light rain...perfect for the garden! So things should start coming through really well.

3/4/2017
Have had some great sunshine and things are really starting to grow well!! We need to get the sprinkler pipe on the garden... SOON!

3/18/2017 - Planted 4 beds of tomato plants (from Ballards in Hurricane)...Juliet Grape; Wilford; Champion; Early Goliath; Goliath; and we thinned the beets, lettuce and spinach; transplanted onions so they weren't all clumped together...

3/18/2017
All the tomato teepees have been put in...the tomato plants have been planted, and the weather is cooperating perfectly!!!

3/31/2017
The Cub Scouts from 3rd Ward and 6th(?) ward came and planted the peanut bed! They did a great job! Now we'll just watch and see how long it takes the peanuts to start poking through the soil...maybe by the end of April???

4/10/2017
FHE Garden Party this evening!! Several people came to help and we got everything done that we had planned:
Planted 2 beds of zucchini; 2 beds of summer and crookneck squash; 2 beds of cucumbers; 1 bed of onions. We pinched off the lower limbs of the tomato plants, dug out the old spinach from last fall; thinned beets; and everyone went home with lots of spinach, lettuce and beet greens! And the weather couldn't be better!!!

4/27/2017
We did a lot of garden maintenance...picking beets, lettuce, spinach and peas. We also pinched back the tomato suckers and made sure they're climbing up the twine/bamboo trellis.

6/5/2017
Pulled all the lettuce and spinach. Planted yellow squash in the lettuce bed.

6/10/2017 Planted zucchini in the spinach bed. The squash beds are producing large amounts of produce!!!

6/11/2017 Planted yellow squash in the lettuce bed

7/17/2017 Purchased corn seed ... Incredible and Peaches N Cream from Hurst Stores $1.49/ounce 11 oz = $16.50 Started soaking on Monday...then Tuesday-Thursday placed in wet paper towels until primary roots were out.

7/20/2017 Planted 2.75 beds with Peaches n Cream seed
7/26/2017 Planted 3 beds with Incredible Corn seed; also planted one bed (old tomato) with Long Beans

8/7/2017 - Did a ton of weeding AND got a lot of planting done, too!! Planted green beans, beets, onions, and carrots!! Looking forward to see how they do!! Hooray for FALL CROPS!!

10/24/2016
harvest and pulled all cornstalks, all green beans, all peanuts, and most of the tomatoes.  Had a torrential downpour yesterday, so everything was very wet!

9/2/2016
Planted spinach and lettuce seed in South Bed #2

8/29/2016
Planted new onion seed (White Spanish) in South Bed #1

7/31/2016
Corn came up great!  2 days of soaking was just fine!

7/25/2016  Planted six beds of Miracle Corn...presoaked for 2 days...next time it should be 3.  But we'll see how it does.

4/7/2016
Planted 60 tomato plants (4 beds), transplanted one bed of onions, planted squash, zucchini, cucumbers, and peppers.

We are working on putting each bed on their own valve so the water pressure is enough to give adequate water coverage.  It's a big job, but will be very beneficial when it's all done!  Thanks to Devon Reeves for all of his work, and his helpers!!

One of the beds of potatoes is looking great!!  I was worried the other bed had rotted...it hasn't!  They are just a slower potato!!  Hooray!

1/23/2016 - Planted pre-soaked peas, beets, onions, also potatoes, carrots, lettuce and spinach. Two beds of each (1 red potato, 1 russet bed)

2015 Garden
(Obviously, I didn't do so well keeping things entered this year!)

3/30/15 Monday night planting party! Planted 80 Bella Rosa / Roma tomato plants; Armenian cucumbers, zucchini, crookneck and yellow squash; sweet banana and Anaheim peppers; thinned carrots and lettuce.

2/9-12/2015 Thanks to so many helpers, the beds got tilled and raked, ready for planting; others planted beets, carrots (double planted in one bed!! *_*), lettuce and spinach, onion sets and onion seed!! Wow! My broken arm is greatly relieved, and the beauty of the garden, and how it functions to bless all of our lives is continually amazing to me!! THANK YOU, ALL!!

1/29/2015 - soaked the pea seeds overnight...planted in the rain. Not too bad, but we were a week later than normal...

=======================================================================
2014 Garden
10/6/2014 Pulled most of the green beans, saved the good beans to eat, and the old beans for planting next year...thinned the beets and carrots, and got rid of a lot of weeds. The rain really must bring in weed seed with it!! *_* Picked more corn, too!!

8/23/2014 Pulled out all the cucumber plants, hand dug the beds; cleaned out the onion beds, hand dug, then planted with Red Weaver Onions and White Spanish onions; pulled out the old squash plants, hand dug and planted both beds in broccoli; pulled the tomato plants, hand dug and planted one bed in beets and one bed in carrots; hand dug the lettuce bed and the previous chard bed, and planted spinach and lettuce (4 kinds); pulled weeds in all the walkways and out of the corn beds.

7/18/2014 Planted 3 beds of corn -- Silver King (1/2 lb) and 3 beds of Peaches and Cream; also planted 2 beds of Tendergreen bush beans. Presoaked the corn seed for one day...should have been two or three...but we ran out of time!! We'll see how long it takes them to come up!

5/29/14 The peas are done in the garden. Pulled them up, stripped off what could be used...kept the dried ones for seed for next year...all the squash plants are starting to produce really well and we've been eating off of them since the 19th. The garlic plants are doing really well, okra was planted two weeks ago, and the carrots and beets are doing well since they were thinned really good!! There have been LOTS of volunteer peanut plants come up, and many have been transplanted. Everything seems to be doing well as we head into our hotter season!

4/4/14 We planted all of the tomato beds (4 in all), the pepper bed, the peanut beds (2 large beds), and thinned the lettuce and beets. The carrot bed has LOTS of seedlings poking up. Looks like a great germination rate!! We'll be thinning there in a couple of weeks! The squash and beets we planted mid-March are doing great. Every hill of squash is up about 2 inches. LOVE IT!!

3/14/2014 Time to update the garden journal! The peas finally started coming up...not as good of germination as years past. Probably due to there being no rain, and we weren't ready to run the garden water lines with there still being some strong freezes. The weather is warming up nicely, the watering lines are almost all complete and things are looking good.

On 3/13/2014 we planted beets, lettuce, zucchini and yellow squash (this is a bit of a gamble, but it's a risk I'm willing to take...and we didn't have to drive to Mesquite to do it!!) *_*

We sure can tell when Mother Nature hasn't given us a lot of moisture. The garden was VERY dry...until a few days of much needed rain! And now we are watering to help out during the dry spells. We will be getting onions, carrots and peanuts planted in the next week...and tomato and pepper plants in by the end of the month. Love gardening in Dixie!!!

2/10/14 Still no sign of peas at the community garden...a few are starting to come up in my home garden...we may need to replant! YIKES!!

1/17/2014 Planted Laxton peas in beds 19 and 20. It has been a VERY dry winter, and I'm concerned about the germination of the peas...we'll see. We also planted 200 sets of onions in Bed #15. A bit concerned about them, too!

2014 HAPPY NEW YEAR OF PLANTING!!!

2013 GARDEN

10/21/2013 We've been harvesting corn and green beans for the past two weeks. Both have been delicious!! We pulled 4 beds of corn, and dug up the 2 beds of peanuts. WOW! The peanuts were incredible!! Too bad we didn't have a scale to weigh them on! Amazing production!!

8/7/2013 Pulled the few remaining onions, prepped the beds and planted one bed in tendergreen bush beans that were soaked overnight, and planted the other bed in white spanish onions. Planted spinach in the herb bed.

7/27/2013 Counted out seeds (1 TBS of Silver King = 100 seeds; 2 TBS of Peaches N Cream corn = 100 seeds) Started soaking seed on cookie sheets. Planned 320 seeds per bed. 40' long beds...poking 4 holes across the bed, every two feet the length of the bed...4 x 20 = 80 holes x 4 seeds per hole = 320 seeds to be planted per bed.

7/19/2013 Pulled all carrots, beets, and squash in first 6 beds on the south side of the garden. Piled on mulch, a few inches thick, and tilled it in. Prepped for planting on the 29th.

6/28/2013 Planted one bed each of zucchini and crook-neck squash. The bed of potatoes we planted in April are doing well, but the potatoes are very small. We're leaving them for awhile, and we'll see how they do in the heat!!

5/25/2013 Planted 6 hills of yellow squash and 6 hills of zucchini in perimeter of triangular bed.

4/25/2013 We've been transplanting a LOT of volunteer peanuts! Maybe we won't need to save as much seed next year, just transplant all the volunteers where we want them to grow!

4/1/2013 We are continually learning. The beets and carrots had to be reseeded due to minimal germination. Note to self: the overhead sprayers work better than bubblers when germination tiny seeds like carrots, beets, and onions!

3/5/2013 Planted SMALL tomato plants from SCHS horticulture class. Worried they might not do so well...Note to self:...next year we should try growing our own tomato starts...

2/3/2013 - Stopped by the garden after church...dug down by the peas, and sure enough, they are sprouting!! They should be up in the next couple of days!!

1-26-2013 Planted Little Marvel Peas (70 day); Onions (Red Weaver, Walla Walla, White, Spanish); Beets (Detroit); Carrots (Imperator); and Lettuce (Mix, Simpson, Romaine), Spinach, Radishes, Turnips.
