EASTER IS GREAT FOR PLANTING NEW SEEDS!!

Even though it was Saturday of Easter weekend, we celebrated by planting spring seeds.  The beet bed got a lot of tender loving care just before the rain on Thursday night...and now the beets have plenty of room to grow!!

As far as seeds that got planted?  We dug 7-10 holes in each of the six beds that are now home to:  honeydew, zucchini, cantaloupe, yellow squash, cucumbers, and watermelon.  The cooler weather was ideal for all the digging and planting, and it only took about an hour.

Rod, Judy and I stayed to make sure all the watering lines were flushed out of the accumulated algae, and to make sure the timers were programmed to come on automatically.  Now the Dixie sunshine can do her thing and we'll just watch everything grow!!

Before everyone left, we picked some beets, lettuce and spinach, along with a couple of ripe strawberries (the kids thought that was great!), a few carrots, and some herbs!

Gardening is ELEMENTARY!!

Santa Clara Elementary School had three different classes walk over from the school for a 45 minute session per class, learning about the garden and having some fun, educational experiences.

The kids started out by the garden sign where we talked about "rules" in the garden.  Then the kids followed-the-leader "Mama Duck" and clapping their hands like duck beaks and shouting "QUACK QUACK" as we walked to different areas in the garden.  They recognized some plants, and not others, but they had so much fun as we wove our way through the beds and stopped to look at plants and learn a bit more.

Each class ended up at the "peanut bed" where they learned how peanuts grow and then everyone got to plant some peanuts.  It was great fun for everyone, students, teachers, parents who helped chaperone, AND Mama Duck!

Our garden is a wonderful community place!
