We have been aware of the on-going pandemic, even in the community garden and each individual has different experiences and even some health concerns. I hate masks!! I don't like being told what I can and can't do!! I really liked Governor Herbert's recommendations to the State of Utah to be socially responsible and wear masks when you're out and about...but he DID NOT MANDATE them. I appreciated that so much!
This morning I brought my mask in my pocket. When a few of us started working in closer proximity to each other, we put on our masks, and it wasn't a huge imposition.
One of our helpers made an excellent point: How often do you wear your seat belt? Always. When was the last time you NEEDED your seat belt? Uhm, never.
The point is: If we wait to wear a mask when it's NEEDED, it might be too late. I appreciated the added perspective!!
We had a great turnout this morning with over 30 volunteers showing up to help!! And we got TONS done! We did a rough count and we have about 20 cantaloupes ripening up, 6 watermelons, with lots of small, young ones coming on, and over 30 pumpkins!!
Our tomato plants are starting to kick into high gear, producing some beautiful and tasty tomatoes! There are sweet 100's, Brandywine cherry tomatoes, Juliet grape tomatoes, and lots of "regular" tomatoes! The pepper plants are producing well, along with the cucumbers, squash and zucchini!!
The weeds did not win the war today!!!
We pulled all of the remaining beets and onions in three of the beds, and got them composted in preparation for planting corn towards the end of July.
The garden is a great place to be!!
