EARLY CROPS IN DIXIE'S SUNSHINE!!!

We were about 1 week later to plant than usual...but it was still great to be out in JANUARY and planting half of the garden! Yep, we planted pre-soaked and sprouted peas, beets, carrots, onions, potatoes, lettuce, and spinach. We had a lot of people turn out to help and it worked beautifully! The sun joined the party, too, and made for a perfect hour of planting! Now we'll just let Mother Nature do her thing and see how these "early" crops do. Then we'll plant more in March!

JANUARY 2017 - LET THE PLANTING BEGIN!!!

Getting ready for the 2017 planting season...we've had quite a bit of rain, and it made tilling the soil absolutely perfect!!! Next week's weather forecast says we'll be into the 60's and more! The peas, beets, carrots, onions, potatoes, lettuce and spinach are SOOOO excited!!!

HOW IT ALL BEGAN!!

People often wonder how the Santa Clara Community Garden came about. Here are the details:

Our local church leadership asked for ideas of how we could help people in all aspects of their lives, whether they are members of our congregation, or not. After some discussion "a garden" was suggested as being able to help people physically (provides food), mentally (you learn a lot by raising a garden), emotionally (the social interaction with other people is very beneficial), and spiritually (being reminded as we work in the soil that we are all God's creation, and by nurturing the soil and the plants we grow, we also nurture our souls!) So, the "why don't you check it out..." was given, and the rest is history!

The owner of the lot, Mr. Anton Tonc, was willing to allow us the use of the lot. Santa Clara City was VERY helpful in giving us approval. Then there were MANY, MANY people who worked, donated, raked, shoveled, trenched, ran sprinkler lines, etc., to make the garden a reality.

With the Spring of 2020, we begin our 11th year of community gardening! Truly amazing, and such a blessing to all who have participated!!
