PLANTING CORN AND BEANS...Pioneer style!!

We planted our corn and beans a little earlier than usual...on the 19th rather than the 24th of July like our pioneer ancestors did...but hopefully everything will be okay!

As always, the helpers who showed up did a great job, and we had fun while doing it!! THANKS!!!

Mid-Week Pulling Party!!

6:30 in the morning...YEP!! That's when we had our work party this week... *_*

We sure got a lot done...pulled both beds of beets and both beds of carrots. We picked squash and cucumbers, used Sevin dust around the new squash plants and we're getting ready for our Pioneer Day planting of corn!! (We'll actually be planting on Monday morning, the 21st!!) Sure appreciate all the help!!

Even though lots of produce went home with the helpers, a lot went out on the "free veggies" table on our corner. LOTS of people benefited!!

(The carrots and beets looked MUCH better when they were washed off!!)

HOW IT ALL BEGAN!!

People often wonder how the Santa Clara Community Garden came about. Here are the details:

Our local church leadership asked for ideas of how we could help people in all aspects of their lives, whether they are members of our congregation, or not. After some discussion "a garden" was suggested as being able to help people physically (provides food), mentally (you learn a lot by raising a garden), emotionally (the social interaction with other people is very beneficial), and spiritually (being reminded as we work in the soil that we are all God's creation, and by nurturing the soil and the plants we grow, we also nurture our souls!) So, the "why don't you check it out..." was given, and the rest is history!

The owner of the lot, Mr. Anton Tonc, was willing to allow us the use of the lot. Santa Clara City was VERY helpful in giving us approval. Then there were MANY, MANY people who worked, donated, raked, shoveled, trenched, ran sprinkler lines, etc., to make the garden a reality.

With the Spring of 2020, we begin our 11th year of community gardening! Truly amazing, and such a blessing to all who have participated!!
