SPRING HAS SPRUNG!!

March is "madness" with regards to the weather (SNOW???  on March 16th???) and with regards to all of the work needing done in the garden!!

Over the few weeks we worked in the garden we were able to put in most of the black plastic needed for the crops that tend to have squash bug issued:  zucchini, squash, cucumbers, watermelon, and cantaloupe.  We also got all of those crops planted.  We've enjoyed watching the potatoes thrive!!  We piled a bunch of compost on top of them, and they LOVED it!!  It will be fun to see what kind of yield we get!!

FABULOUS FEBRUARY ... saying goodbye!

February is such a great month in Dixie!!  The skies are clear and the brightest blue!  Nights are cold, but the days are wonderful!!  It gives us time to work in the garden and look forward to the real growing seasons just around the corner!

The past couple of weeks have seen us planting beets, onion seed, spinach and lettuce; watering the pea beds, and this morning we planted the LONGEST potato chits I've ever seen!!  One person's "Oops!  I forgot we even had these!" becomes our next adventure!!

The Wonders of "Winter Thaw!!"

FOUR DAYS with people helping for ONE HOUR each day did wonders for the garden!!  Monday was spent digging carrots, raking leaves and composting beds.  Tuesday was digging onions out of one bed, composting more beds, marking off beds, and shoveling out walkways.

Wednesday was all about counting out sets of 100 (onions) for a total of 18 bags of 100...or 1800 onion sets!!!  Holy smokes!!

Thursday everyone planted, and planted and planted some more!!  We got two beds of peas planted (soaked the peas overnight) and planted 1798 onion sets...the baby ate two of them as she watched us work!!  The rest of the tilling got done, and now the storms that were predicted can come in.  We're ready and so is the garden!  Perfect timing!!!

Garden Sleeps through Thanksgiving and Christmas...sort of!

With the weather cooling off, the garden has really slowed down.  However, the spinach, lettuce, broccoli and carrots are doing well!  We've had some great help getting the empty beds composted and tucked in for a very "short winters' nap!"

Mid-January will be here before we know it, and we will hit the ground running...or rather, tilling!! *_*

The Last of the Fall Harvest

We had the last of our Fall Harvest, picking corn, peanuts, watermelon, pumpkins, green beans, onions, lettuce and spinach!!  We we've worked hard the last couple of weeks to clean out LOTS of biomass that's going to turn into a mess with the coming freeze this weekend.  So, we're saying good-bye until January 2021 and hope it's a less "interesting" year for the world!!
