Gambling in the Garden...

 Planting 40 tomato plants towards the end of March was a gamble.  Since I don't have much experience with playing cards I'm not sure what the term is when you lose some, but not all.  So I'll simply say we're still in the game, although we had to replace 30 plants!!

Everything is coming up extremely well!!  Even the peanuts!!  One more month and the garden should be full of green!!  As it is we have beautiful starts of cucumber, cantaloupe, watermelon, zucchini, squash, beets, peas, onions, and peanuts.  Kalvin dug the bowls for our pumpkin crop and got them planted.  So excited to see how everything turns out!!

PLANTING TIME!!

 The past week we spent some time getting the garden ready to plant.  On Saturday, March 26th, we had a large turnout and we got everything done we had planned on!!  This included planting:  4 beds of tomato plants donated by Star Nursery on Sunset; 2 beds of zucchini, 1 bed of crookneck squash; 1 bed of summer squash; 1 bed of Armenian cucumbers; 1 bed of Cruncher Muncher cucumbers; 2 beds of watermelon (including 3 bowls of YELLOW watermelon), and one bed of peanuts; and we also dug out one bed of carrots and some wintered-over lettuce.  The spinach is still doing great!

SPRING HAS SPRUNG!!!

 We had a glorious day in the garden this morning.  It was wonderful to be working side-by-side with so many friends and neighbors.  AND we got lots done!!

All 24 beds were marked off with new stakes and twine; weeds and leaves were disposed of; the two beds of beets were planted; and watering of the peas, onions and lettuce/spinach got done!  It sure feels good!!

2022 - Let Gardening Begin!

 We had our first garden party of 2022 on January 10th!!  The "winter thaw" came a bit early this year, however we had great help digging up the onion sets from the fall and there were enough to fill an entire bed!!  Kids had a blast digging up some of the fall carrots...and they found some big ones!!

On Thursday we had another work party and got two beds of sugar snap peas planted along with a bed of lettuces and spinach for a nice spring crop.  We are all amazed that the fall lettuces and spinach have over-wintered very well and we have been cutting salad stuff all winter long!!  

I am trying an experiment with growing broccoli starts...so we might be planting the end of January!!  Maybe we should call our garden the "Santa Clara Community-Experimental Garden!!"  I love that we learn all kinds of things together by trial and error!!  The garden is a great place to learn!!

Tucking the Garden into Bed...

 The garden is still producing a few things like lettuce, spinach, onions and carrots, although production is kind of slow...the rest of the beds have been composted (thanks to the generous donations of compost from Republic Waste!!), and now most of the beds have been thoroughly tilled and are ready to sleep for a "short winter's nap!"  

Mid-January will see use planting broccoli starts, peas, beets, onions and carrots...then we'll watch how things fair through February.  Spring in Utah's Dixie is a wonderful, unpredictable time!!  Thanks to everyone who has helped so much with the garden!  We have just completed our 12th year and the garden has been a wonderful addition to many lives!!
