Fall Plantings Already!!

 Time was spent last week pulling a lot of dead plants, composting beds and getting things ready for planting today.  We had some great helpers and we were able to plant peas (pre-sprouted), beans, onions, beets, and carrots.  We also picked a LOT of tromboncini (variety of zucchini) that is overtaking the whole southeast corner of the garden!!  And a bunch of tomatoes!!  We picked one of the last cantaloupes, and watermelon.  The cantaloupe was sweet, although crisp.  The watermelon wasn't as sweet as earlier ones.  It was a great day!

 We may have dug the potatoes out a bit earlier than needed, however, we needed the bed to plant our pumpkins in!!  We still got some excellent potatoes!!  We also got a great first picking of Zucchini, we replanted some of the bowls of yellow squash that didn't come up, replanted some peanuts for the same reason, wrapped more tomato plants, "trellised" Armenian cucumbers that are spreading everywhere, and counted FOUR little watermelons on our "volunteer" plant by the water fountain!

The high temperatures (over 100!) the past few days have taken their toll on our beautiful lettuce beds!!  The lettuce is still pretty, but it is very bitter!!  So far, the spinach is still tasting great, but I can't imagine it will last much longer.  104 degrees is a friend to the peanuts, but not the lettuce!!

 

PEANUT PLANTING...AT LAST!!!

 The last Spring crop we usually plant is PEANUTS!  It is so fun for kids to plant these and they are a very easy crop to grow!! Now we just sit back and watch things grow!!

SPRING HAS SPRUNG!!

 March is "madness" with regards to the weather (SNOW???  on March 16th???) and with regards to all of the work needing done in the garden!!

Over the few weeks we worked in the garden we were able to put in most of the black plastic needed for the crops that tend to have squash bug issued:  zucchini, squash, cucumbers, watermelon, and cantaloupe.  We also got all of those crops planted.  We've enjoyed watching the potatoes thrive!!  We piled a bunch of compost on top of them, and they LOVED it!!  It will be fun to see what kind of yield we get!!

FABULOUS FEBRUARY ... saying goodbye!

 February is such a great month in Dixie!!  The skies are clear and the brightest blue!  Nights are cold, but the days are wonderful!!  It gives us time to work in the garden and look forward to the real growing seasons just around the corner!

The past couple of weeks have seen us planting beets, onion seed, spinach and lettuce; watering the pea beds, and this morning we planted the LONGEST potato chits I've ever seen!!  One person's "Oops!  I forgot we even had these!" becomes our next adventure!!
